The beginning

Several years later with the money earned he bought pastry shop for Turkish delight and boza.

The small Jacan grew into a factory, which besides tahini halva produced sesame oil. Chalyovski established his second factory in 1921 in Burgas and he also established a factory for confectionery products.

The shepherd from Galichnik – Western Macedonia after the Liberation of Bulgaria emigrated to Sofia, where the same sold boza in the steets of the capital.

The two companies in Sofia and Burgas were named ‘Industrial house for the production of confectionery products, vegetable oil, tahini, cocoa, chocolate, biscuits, caramel, etc., founded in 1898 by Abraham Chalyovski’.  Apart from entrepreneurship, Abraham Chalyovski is famous for his extensive charity activities. He made a great donation to the Zograf Monastery, which on its turn gave him the icon of St. Spyridon the Wonderworker, who is the patron of the company.

He also donated a chapel to the Church of the Assumption of St. Ivan Rilski in the Rila Monastery. At Chalyovski’s lived and worked the famous woodcarver from Tryavna Gencho Marangozov for 17 years, who created a number of masterpieces. Furthermore, Chalyovski donated through his will aids, worth 550 000 BGN to the Bigorski Monastery, Church ‘St. Petka’ in his native village, ‘St. Dimitar’ in Burgas and ‘St. Nicholas of Sofia’ in Sofia.

Bas-relief of Geo Milev

Geo Milev – Georgi Kasabov Milev is a Bulgarian poet and literary critic, follower and defender of symbolism and expressionism in Bulgaria, keen supporter of individualism and aestheticism, impressed by ‘modern’ German poetry. At the beginning of World War I he moved to London in order to get familiar with English literature and then moved to Germany to continue his education as he was arrested in Hamburg by the German police as an ‘English spy’.

After returning to Bulgaria, he began to promote the works of the European modern poets. In March 1916 he was mobilized and in 1917 he was wounded, as a result of which he lost his left eye. He passed a surgery in Berlin (staying there until 1919). In Bulgaria he issued a magazine, called ‘Vezni’ (1919-1921).

His evolution towards revolutionary ideas found expression in the new magazine ‘Plamak’ (1925), which was suspended because of the poem ‘September’, as in accordance with the Law on State Protection the author was sentenced to 1-year prison and a fine amounting to 20 000 BGN. He was arrested on 15.05.1925 and then he was considered for ‘missing’.
